Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a tropical island off the coast of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. It is a predominantly muslim community - it was originally used by Middle Easterners and Indians as a trading port with Africa (predominantly for spices - hence it's nickname the spice island - but also for slaves). It has the most beautiful beaches we've ever encountered and great old world architecture in the capital Stone Town. Much of the place is quite dirty though. Click on any image for a larger version

Relaxing on Nungwe beach (at the north of the island). On one of the famous "spice tours" learning about the history of Zanzibar and its spice production.

The Africa House Hotel. A shell of an old colonial building which looks like its ready to collapse. We went upstairs to a bar for drinks while watching the sunset over the ocean. Our US$10 a night beach cabins at Nungwe beach. Fantastic and minute walk to the best bars on Zanzibar.
